I Want To Know What Mood Is

I’ve started to revisit my subject collection, and going back through the feedback to see what changes I can make to try and bump my grade up a bit. First things first, last week I finally made my orange ribbon! I managed to corner Steve and get seem of that beautiful orange foil before all the second/first years used it all up again. I did make two pieces, but the foil hardly came out on the one of them, so I don’t have a smaller piece to fit on my mini product board, but I’m sure I can figure something out.

The next step was to push my mood boards up a notch. My field project has really helped me develop my skills in making mood boards. I used to slap a few images together and think it looked brill, thankfully Irene has really pushed me to research mood boards and see how creative and well laid out they can be.  I know play with different effects in my mood boards, use of layering and text, etc.

I’m much happier with how my new mood boards look, I think they’re so much more professional.

Sealed With a Grid

After speaking with Irene on Tuesday, she told me to look into using silicone to make the back piece of my jacket from. My idea is to have a sprite grid as an overlay on the back of my first jacket. I had been experimenting with laser-cutting which is a bit flat and very fragile, so the suggestion of using silicone was quite interesting. Plus I was worried that the size of the laser-cutting that I would need wouldn’t have fit into the machine.

I made a trial grid last night out of silicone which was really messy and a bit wobbly, but I twas really cool and it was super easy to imagine it much neater, painted and affixed to my jacket and I really like how all that sounds! I just need to practice.


Sweet Bow O’ Mine

Next week is when we move into the more developmental stage of creating prototypes and thinking about how our designs will look on products.

Sometimes I can’t help myself, I see a picture and I just get super exciting and end up making gift bows! Which is exactly what happened the other day. While I was looking into ribbons and the different types you can get, I came across this crazy halloween gift bow that was just mad, it had loads of layers and furry stuff coming out of the middle, and I just wanted to make a little bow that had my designs on it …

It was pretty simple to make actually, I just chopped up quite a few strips of white organdie, clear acetate and one of my designs that was just sitting in my samples folder and started to glue, staple and stitch them together, and this cute little thing emerged.

The gift bow is an area I’ve been having difficulty with, I want it to fit in with my collection; so I want it to be quite modern and edgy but I just don’t think gift bows are.

So I started looking into different types of bow and I came across a picture of a bow tie, and I started thinking, wouldn’t that be a better approach, having a bow tie (with the elastic collar too) wrapped around a gift box?

I’ve been gathering images of bow ties, both for men and women, and have been looking at the different folds and materials, I saw a really cool one that was made from wire, it was just an outline of a bow … that still classes as a gift bow right?

I’ve also been thinking about hair bows, or just how scarfs are tied into bows, that could be a cool idea to explore, and then I would have both a more masculine and more feminine bow so that my collection will still connect with both markets.

Who knows? My mind wanders everywhere sometimes.

Manic Mood-Boards

Taking advice from Sarah and Irene, I decided to change my mood boards. They were right; they didn’t fit my collection, the didn’t look professional and they certainly didn’t contain anything of myself in them. They were essentially, just boards with a few photos stuck on them.

Now I know that mood boards shouldn’t take a long time, half a day at the most, but I think I went a little over the time limit. Not by much mind you, but it still took me longer to put together a cohesive set of boards than I would have wanted.

I researched mood boards beforehand, going on art thread and looking at some really cool ones on there, before striking out to create my own.

I used images which I had already gathered, along with a few of my own designs to create some really cool mood boards that matched with the designs that I have been creating, and the overall fell I want my collection to have.

Instead of an inspiration board I decide to to have a font & prints board where I displayed some of my designs along with ones, created but other people, that I find inspirational. This was a really good move, because already, from just looking at this board it focuses my mind.

Another piece of advice I had was to use foam to lift some of the images off the page, giving different levels, which I did and I have to say, I do really like the effect it has; it’s really professional and brings another dimension to the board.

I wasn’t really loving the idea of colour chips on my board. Just blocks of flat colour, or flat foil in my case, so instead, I got out some of my samples that had the foil colours that I’ve decided I’m going to use throughout my collection, and cut a small piece from these samples, so as to see the foils in use. I think it looks much better and fits better with my boards. I also used foam to lift some of the colour and materials into the foreground.

I’m really pleased with my new mood boards, they are definitely better suited to my collection now, and they will help me to really focus and refine my designs.

Making Connection; ADZ5777 Week One

Second year has started, time to prepare myself for mass amounts of work.

This week was my first week back in university back to study my second year of textiles at Cardiff Met and let me tell you, i’m so happy its finally back! after such a long summer break i’m so ready to come back and get some textiles going.

On Tuesday I had my introduction onto Level 5 textiles, and all the opportunities and possibilities that lay ahead. Having had the brief and timetable emailed in advance of our first day, I started to read through what I could expect of this year and boy does it sound great, scary and a bit daunting, but great. This year is all about Making Connections. Working from companies on commissions, finding actual work placements with real companies in the textiles business, and creating work that is based on trend and upcoming styles, so that its relevant. The most important thing is to find out what sort of designer I want to be, what sector of textiles I want to focus on, what media and techniques I prefer to work with, what style. All these things are essential tools for the creation of great work.

Trying to help myself a bit, I started to do some company/designer research the week leading up to Level 5. Having read the brief I knew how sort a time I’d have to fins so many different designers and companies across the three different areas of textiles; interior, fashion and stationery. I’m trying to organize my time so I don’t start getting behind on work, I want everything to be done in time to move onto the next stage of work, which means, that I needed to start doing my research ASAP. I’m enjoying it so far, I’ve been able to find designers and companies that are completely different from each other, had a change to look through their work, read what they have written about their creation, and have also been able to contact a few and ask then about their inspiration and the driving force behind what they are putting forward.

Knowing how much work I have to do and what is expected of me, I’m amazed at the students who are now in third year, last year I looked through their work and was inspiring to see how professional and put together their portfolios and moodboards etc. were.

On Thursday I has my first digital stich workshop of the year, starting with a quick refresher of some of the techniques that we learn last year. I was able to start getting back into the swing of using different sewing techniques as well as being able to use load of different thread and materials. After the quick refresh we moved on to learning the basics of use the digital programs which are required for the digital stitch machines. Learning the different buttons and the different tools available, the different type of stitches and different fill types (weave, satin etc.) as well as learning how to rotate the actual design or just the stitch direction. I t was all really useful knowledge, which will help me to narrow down the types of techniques and processes I will want to use during this project.

Sustainable Materials for Outdoor Shelters/Covering

Hello fellow textile enthusiasts! For this post I’m looking into another ideas that was generated during my groups tutorial on Monday. Having been advised to think about what materials we’re going to use, I started to think about what materials would be sustained in different weathers, if our designs were to be displayed/uses for long durations.

In one of my stitch workshops last month we were given the option of using metal foil on the sewing machine. During the tutorial Helen mentioned an artist how embroidered with metal and this remind me of that workshop and the samples that I would be able to create with this foil that would show what I would plan to do on a larger scale.20150311_111441639_iOS

Having never used metal before I have having trouble with coming up with ideas of what I could do with it. I didn’t know what techniques would work or what wouldn’t and I didn’t know where to start. I had the idea of using a pattern I had already embroidered onto the metal but again I couldn’t think a way of how. I started to draw the pattern onto the back of the metal so that I would be able to guide it through the sewing machine, but while I was drawing I pressed into the metal to hard and it embossed the pattern onto the other side. I really liked the look of this so I pressed even harder to see the result. I like the sample for the design and the gold colouring but I don’t think that it is colour enough to reflect the cultures that I have been looking into.

With that in mind I started to think on ways in which I could add colour onto metal, I thought about using Bondaweb but I wouldn’t be able to iron onto the metal. I then started to think on other ways that I would be able to get colour and pattern onto the metal; I came to printing.  I also decided to experiment with sewing onto the metal and then threading cotton through the holes. I like the use of colour I this experiment and the different textures that have been combined. 20150311_094849095_iOS


Constructing Movements in Art and Design Week 5 – Constructivism and Suprematism

This week in Constellation we were looking into the workings of Constructivism and Suprematism, both of which are Russian avant-garde movements. I found both of these movements to be quite interesting in their ideas, the way that they explored the use of colour and materials. what was really good about this lecture was that we explored the main leader of each movements, comparing their work and seeing how the artwork of these two artist embodied the spirits of each movements.

Malevich, whose work was based mainly around colour, was the artist most associated with Suprematism. he explored the relationship between the world and objects; trying to emphasise the basics of picture making while literally adding things from the actual world. As Malevich became more interested in the basics of form and colour, his work started to become much more abstract. He played with the idea of the zero point of paintings, which is the point where the world if no longer visible with the artwork. within these works, colour reign supreme.

Taltin’s work was almost the opposite of Malevich. He worked with materials, exploring sculpture and the boundaries of frames.  His work was considered revolutionary, because before this point, sculpture was mainly bound up in the showing of the human figure, Tatlin challenged this and brought in sculpture that was based around abstraction. Constructivism focused on three main areas; Tectonics / Factura / Construction.

This is the first time I’ve looked at artwork specifically relating to sculpture, and I find it refreshing to export the world of sculpture I find it interesting that the types of materials used within Tatlin sculptures are hard an angular, industrial materials, which perhaps reflects the society and the culture in which they were created. it as a time of huge upheaval, and this was reflected in the work that was created,. as with all art movements it was relating to what was happening around it, pushing boundaries, thriving. I like constructivism because of the inventiveness of what they created and how they went against the norm.
